Ladies Sodality

The Ladies Sodality of the Assumption of Our Lady was founded way back in 1944, when the then parish priest, Fr. S. Braganza , convened a meeting of the ladies of the parish, on the 7th May of that year, with the intention of starting a sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary. 70 ladies attended that meeting & the Sodality was inaugurated on the 24th May 1944, the feast day of Mary Help of Christians. Fr. S Braganza was its first Spiritual Director & Mrs. Loretta Gonsalves its first Prefect.

However since the month of May was a vacation month and many ladies were away at that time, it was decided from 1947, our country’s first Independence Day, to celebrate the annual feast on the 15th August and since then we have come to be known as the Sodality of the Assumption of Our Lady.

Today the sodality has 79 members on its rolls, of whom 12 members are sick and house-bound.

Meetings, which were originally held every Saturday are now held every Wednesday at 5.45 p.m. in the Parish Parlour, at which the Office of the Immaculate Conception or the Rosary is usually recited, followed by a brief but meaningful reflection given by our Spiritual Director, Fr. Clement de Lima, after which forthcoming plans and activities are discussed. Once every month we now have a beautiful sharing on the Word of God by Mrs. Joan Manohar of Mount Carmel’s Parish, Bandra. The sharing is on the Gospel passage of the forthcoming Sunday & the entire session is deeply appreciated & enjoyed by our Sodalists.

Once a month we also have a Tea Meeting , at 5.00p.m. at which we have interesting cookery, craft or art demonstrations and useful, practical skills are shared. As its name indicates, tea, snacks & fellowship follow. The Sodality engages in several Apostolates & each sodalist is a member of one Apostolate. Our Apostolic Activities include the Sale of Examiners, the care of Church Linen & the Sacristy, visiting our Sick & House-bound sodalists & the Prayer group. We also have regular prayer sessions & recollections, go on Mission trips, sell home-made snacks & sweets on certain Saturdays after the Evening Mass, organize the ‘Hour of Grace’ on the 8th December each year & ‘Ladies Time Out’ once every year for the ladies of our parish.

Our Annual Feast is celebrated with great joy on the 15th August each year with a Eucharistic Celebration which includes the Installation of new Office Bearers, the Admission of New Members & a joyous Brunch in the Kiddies Corner. It is preceded by a well-planned 9 day Novena, with a special theme each year. The sodality members take great pride in decorating the altar and the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the occasion of this Feast.  Some photographs from recent years are below.

The main current Office Bearers for the years 2012 to 2014 are:

Mrs. Elaine Charles – Prefect
Mrs. Hazel Barboza – Asst. Prefect
Mrs. Colette Fernandes – Secretary
Mrs. Theresa Fernandes & Mrs. Sandra Jeffries – Treasurers
Mrs. Felicity Rodrigues, Mrs. Anne Aguiar & Mrs. Marianne Fernandes – Advisors

The Ladies Sodality warmly welcomes all ladies of our parish to join the sodality & experience a greater deepening of the faith, joyous fellowship, new friendships and the learning of useful crafts & handy skills.
